What is it? This test is an alternate way to test into college level English or Math courses in some institutions. MACC and State Technical College of Missouri are two example schools that allow scores from this exam. If students do not achieve the qualifying ACT score, this is another way to test in to a English or Math class.

ASVAB

What is it? The ASVAB is a military aptitude test. Hallsville offers this exam once a year to students interested in going to the military. October 14, 2021 is the test date for this year. This is a FREE test that is offered during the school day. It takes about 3.5 hours. This test does NOT obligate you in any way to be a part of the military. Once scores are returned, you may use it as a tool to discuss with recruiters to see what your military options are if you wish. Scores are only good for 2 years.
How to sign up: Hallsville offers the exam in October each school year. Let one of the School Counselors know so they can add you to the list. Students may also set up an individual exam with their recruiter if they missed this test date, or wish to take it another time. It is FREE. ACTWhat is it? The ACT is a college entrance exam that tests students in the following areas: English / Reading / Math / Science / Plus Writing (optional). This is a national exam that have specific tests dates.
How to sign up: Students to register themselves for the national test dates must do so at www.actstudent.org . Information on exam fees can be found here. Students that receive free or reduced lunches can request a waiver to this fee from their School Counselor. Deadlines to register for each exam date are approximately 1.5 months in advance. When should you take the ACT?
- The year before you take College Algebra. Students currently in Algebra II should have 1-2 tests by the end of the year to have a qualifying test score for the college course.
- The year before you take College Composition. Students currently in English II or English III with plans of College Composition for their next English course.
- Before senior year.
- Students with ACT scores prior to their senior year are ready to begin applying to post-secondary institutions as soon as their senior year begins.
- All juniors will be offered a free optional ACT during their junior year.
- Any student pursuing State Technical College, Community College, or University level post-secondary education need an ACT for acceptance and English / Math course placement.
- Most colleges have "Priority Deadlines" for automatic scholarships. Example: Mizzou has a December 1 priority deadline. Students with specific ACT / GPA scores will be awarded scholarships.
- During senior year.

PSAT-NMSQTWhat is it? The PSAT is an exam that is taken during the junior year to practice for the SAT. It is also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This is a national exam that is only given once each Fall. This year the exam is scheduled on October 12, 2022.
Sophomores are welcome to test as a practice but will not be eligible for the scholarship competition. All fees and sign up process is the same. How to sign up: Students interested in taking this exam, notify Mrs. Austene by September 10. In the past the cost of the exam was $17. How to prepare: When the receipt is turned in, you may pick up a PSAT-NMSQT practice book. It has a full length practice test, and a ton of information regarding all the scholarship opportunities out there for students with qualifying scores. A.P.What is it? Students have an opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses while in high school. These courses are approved by the College Board because they meet their rigorous standard of curriculum. Any student taking an AP class will have this designation on their high school transcripts. In the Spring of each school year, students have an opportunity to choose to take the AP Exam. Any student may take any AP Exam, even if they don't take an AP class. Students typically receive their scores in July. Scores range is 1-5. Colleges nation wide will recognize these scores and potentially offer credit, or allow students to skip over a General Education Course at the college level. Each college has different criteria. It is up to the student to contact the college they are interested in applying to, to see what their criteria is. How to sign up: To sign up, students will need to pay Mrs. Culwell the AP Exam Fee by TBD. After payment is received by Mrs. Culwell, the student needs to bring the yellow receipt to Mrs. Austene (make sure it has the name of the exam(s) on the receipt). Mrs. Austene will order tests based on the number of students that turn receipts in to her. Hallsville participates in the following exams:
Students wishing to take other exams, need to contact College Board directly to get a list of local AP Coordinators at other schools to see where you can test. This must be done by March 1 of each year. Students with disabilities need to notify their IEP casemanager in January. Students that do not meet this deadline will not receive accommodations. |
End of Course Exams
What is it? The Missouri Assessment Program assesses students' progress toward the Missouri Learning Standards, which are Missouri's content standards. End-of-Course assessments (EOC's) are taken when a student has received instruction on the Missouri Learning Standards for an assessment, regardless of grade level.
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requires districts to administer Algebra I, English II, Biology, and Government prior to graduation. Other EOC's Missouri school districts can have the option of administering are English I, Geometry, Algebra II, American History and Physical Science. Most EOCs are multiple choice questions, however, English II and Algebra I, have a second session that will require a student to do a performance event which is a more demanding task requiring students to work through problems, experiments, arguments, or extended pieces of writing. How to sign up? Student's course schedule automatically determines any EOCs a student will be administered. Hallsville High School administers EOCs both in the Fall and Spring. |
How to prepare? A student begins preparation for an EOC assessment on the first day the student is in attendance in an EOC course to assessment day. The ACT WorkKeys Assessment is one of the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Assessments used by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to measure whether our graduates are prepared for life after graduation.
ACT WorkKeys assessments are research-based measures of foundational work skills required for success across industries and occupations. They measure the hard and soft skills needed for success in the workforce. How to sign up: See your school counselor to sign up. Juniors are eligible for a free test session if they would rather take this exam instead of the ACT. |
